The ESG Potential of Culture - Unlocking the S

Challenge

Companies are increasingly working with ESG, but the social dimension - the “S” - is often difficult to define clearly and address strategically in practice.

At the same time, there is significant potential in partnerships between arts, culture, and business. However, these collaborations often lack a shared language and clear incentives that make the value relevant and actionable for companies.

The challenge was therefore to develop a tool that could translate the value of arts and culture into a business context and make social sustainability more concrete and operational.

Solution

BARC developed and facilitated the Unlocking the S methodology for KPMG and launched it at the conference Art as a Business Tool at SMK, in collaboration with key partners.

The purpose was to introduce the Unlocking the S framework as a practical tool. The methodology is based on using art and culture as strategic tools for social initiatives and value creation within companies.

Through presentations, case studies, and panel discussions, the framework was activated through concrete examples from businesses, cultural organisations, and institutions including KPMG, Kunst på Arbejde, Turning Tables Denmark, and Brøndby IF.

The conference served as a platform to demonstrate how art can be used actively to strengthen social initiatives - and make the “S” in ESG more tangible, practical, and operational.
